My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a "pro-choice therapist" means creating a much-needed safe space for those navigating a very common but still highly stigmatized life experience. It means engaging in a therapeutic practice that invites vulnerable populations to feel safe and seen and allows clients to truly believe in their own reproductive freedom and body autonomy because they never feel judged or misunderstood by their clinician. Being a pro-choice therapist means using our tools to ground in the person-centered approach, normalizing the client's experience, and ensuring that we respond to the client in a way that validates and helps them build shame resilience.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Every person deserves to have full agency over their body and the choices they make as they navigate a world that tells them otherwise. It is incredibly important to me as a clinician, as someone with a uterus, and as a queer person to engage in work that centers the experiences of marginalized people and addresses their needs. I have many loved ones who have faced the stigma surrounding abortion as they navigate unexpected pregnancies, and I know that having a supportive individual who truly believes in reproductive freedom and body autonomy, and lives by those values, is critical.
