History
Pro-Choice Therapists was founded in May 2023 by Dr. Ashley Sweet as her culminating project for her doctorate in clinical sexology. A 14-year veteran of Planned Parenthood state affiliates and the national office, as well as a licensed mental health professional, Dr. Sweet saw an urgent need for prospective therapy clients to find providers who would affirm all their reproductive experiences—and for pro-choice therapists to have a network, community, and opportunities for education.
Alongside Dr. Sweet, the original Pro-Choice Therapists all volunteer team included Erin Barringer-Sterner, Jennifer De Jesus, Anna Collins Maling, Kristen Portney, and Allison Whitney. Pro-Choice Therapists would not exist without the passion, dedication, and unseen labor of this team; an abundance of gratitude is extended to these individuals and their collective work.
In 2025, Dr. Sweet—with the support of this original team—approached Dr. Rachel Dyer about acquiring Pro-Choice Therapists and supporting its growth moving forward. The original team had cultivated Pro-Choice Therapists through its initial years, and were ready for others to plant, tend, and harvest.
In 2026, Dr. Dyer became Pro-Choice Therapists’ second, volunteer CEO.
