Organization Values
Reproductive Justice: Pro-Choice Therapists works to uphold reproductive justice as defined by SisterSong, Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective: "the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities." Pro-Choice Therapists understands that:
-
Following the lead and needs of minoritized communities results in better care and a better world for everyone.
-
A focus on abortion alone privileges the White and wealthy, and is insufficient for serving the needs of minoritized communities--namely, Black and Brown, poor, disabled, gender diverse, and immigrant persons among others.
-
Abortion is one element of reproductive justice, and must be intersectional and contextual in its examination--requiring access, agency, and support to engage in one's family-building when and how one chooses, without coercion and uninformed consent.
Abortion-Positive: Pro-Choice Therapists' name emphasizes language accessibility; we understand that those seeking us out may use the term "pro-choice," rather than "abortion-positive." While Pro-Choice Therapists is "pro-choice" insofar as we affirm each persons' right to abortion, parenthood, and/or placing for adoption, we are--more essentially--"abortion positive," meaning we actively support and destigmatize abortion. Pro-Choice Therapists will never impose a "pro-choice" or "abortion-positive" label onto any clients, nor assume our clients share these values.
Reflexivity and Lifelong Learning: Pro-Choice Therapists engages ongoing in a process of reflexivity--considering how who we are, and the experiences we have had, come together with diverse client experiences related to abortion, parenthood, and/or placing for adoption. Committing to examining internalized stigma and biases, seeking clinical supervision or consultation when needed, Pro-Choice Therapists practices humility and lifelong learning, centering curiosity and an earnest recognition that there is always more to know.
Evidence-Based Practice: Pro-Choice Therapists vets and trains our therapists—who are provided current, scientific information about the complexity of abortion, stigma, and mental health, as well as other reproductive and family-building experiences. Pro-Choice Therapists also recognizes the need for more and quality research in the area of abortion and mental health.
