My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a pro-choice therapist means trusting my clients to make the best decisions possible for themselves and understanding they have the right to control what they can with regard to their lives. It means allowing them to explore any and all options available to them without judgment or advice, about all aspects of their lives, but most specifically when it comes to their reproductive health and choices for how they would like to handle a pregnancy at any stage and with or without any complicating factors.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Control over our bodies and what happens to them is the most basic and fundamental right I can think of. To have outside forces or agencies attempting to pass legislation impacting the bodies and life trajectories of others is a violation of basic human rights. If we trust clients to be the expert on their own life and experiences, as well as exert control over their decisions, but not extend them the same autonomy for their bodies, we can’t say we are person-focused and believe in our clients’ abilities to make sound decisions for themselves.
