My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
I believe that the decision to have an abortion is a personal decision and that it is essential for me as a clinician to not only support that choice but to create a holding environment that contextualizes the history of and stigma associated with reproductive rights in the U.S. I maintain that this is essential in order to help process any feelings related to each person's choice and work to decrease any personal shame that might be attached. It also means vocally naming my support of and advocating for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy within and outside of the therapeutic space.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are steeped in a history of white supremacist eugenics and are issues that have been used as tools within our patriarchal society to uphold oppressive values. As such, abortion rights are a central part of fighting for our collective liberation. In addition, as a trauma-informed, client-centered therapist, it is a core value of mine to encourage choice and autonomy in all areas of the lives of those I work with.
