My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a pro-choice therapist means supporting EVERYONE's right to an abortion as well as holding the responsibility to shed light on how common they are, the importance of them in medical care, and supporting individuals' right to make this choice regardless of their reasoning and reducing stigma. I believe that I cannot know what is best for other people, nor should I or others be able to decide that. I support this right on both systemic and individual levels. I want all clients and potential clients to know that my office/sessions are a safe space to talk about abortion free of judgment or fear. Being a pro-choice therapist also means protecting those seeking abortions from further harm which comes from shaming and punishment that governments are implementing.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are important to me because they are basic human rights. I believe we are born with these rights and should have access to safe ways to express them regardless of circumstances like socioeconomic status, geographic region, race, or religion. As a clinician in this field, I have seen firsthand how taking away these rights causes trauma, stigma, and exacerbates systemic oppression, worsening the mental and physical health of so many. As someone who identifies as a woman and feminist, it is also important to me that we have equal rights and work towards more equity in our society rather than oppression.
