My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
As a pro-choice therapist and person, I wholeheartedly support the right of all people to choose for themselves what happens to their bodies (and this includes whether or not to continue a pregnancy, for any reason). This means creating a brave, nonjudgmental space to consider thoughts, emotions, values, and options without pressure or shame. I am validating, warm, and open-minded. I approach these conversations with respect and trust. I believe that my clients know what is best for them, and it is my job to facilitate that understanding.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
These rights are essential to our physical and psychological safety, and have so often been oppressed and stripped away from marginalized groups. In a society that teaches people their worth is what their bodies offer- their productivity, their privilege, their appearance- to instead prioritize bodily autonomy is a necessary transformative justice. Personally speaking, this is a value of the highest order.
