My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
My vision of the role of a "pro-choice therapist" is to provide a safe space that allows people the opportunity to explore and hopefully integrate their feelings, thoughts, as well as the potential positive and negative consequences that go along with decisions related to their pregnancy and, ultimately, help them to be guided in that process by facts, life goals, and values as opposed to fear. Unfortunately, the presence of forces that promote feelings of shame, stigma and fear means that the need for non-judgmental, supportive environments is even greater and extends across people contemplating pregnancy options, currently navigating the challenges of what they have determined to be their best course of action, and even those reflecting on pregnancy decisions from the past.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are important guiding values to me both personally and as a therapist. The challenges and decisions related to a person's physical, reproductive, and mental health are highly individual and embedded within multiple complex contextual factors that are too many too name (e.g. financial stability, religious background, race, relationship status, age, planned/unplanned pregnancy, medical risks, etc.). While I believe it can be beneficial to seek support and input from trusted sources such as family, friends, medical providers and therapists; only the person navigating through their own lived experiences truly has the fullest picture to decide what path makes the most sense and will be most helpful in the service of the needs of that person and that pregnancy at that time and they deserve to be supported in whatever path they take.
