My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a "pro-choice therapist" to me means deeply valuing and actively supporting an individual's right to make autonomous decisions regarding their own reproductive health and life choices. It's grounded in the belief that each person is the best authority over their own body and life circumstances, and that they should have the freedom to choose paths that align with their values, desires, and needs without facing judgment or coercion.

In my practice, this philosophy translates into creating a safe and affirming space where all aspects of a person's identity and life decisions are respected. It means providing a non-judgmental, supportive environment where clients can explore their feelings, thoughts, and options concerning reproductive health, including pregnancy, abortion, contraception, and fertility, among others.

Being pro-choice also extends beyond reproductive health to encompass a broader commitment to respecting clients' choices in all areas of their lives. It involves advocating for and upholding principles of autonomy, consent, and informed choice across various contexts, ensuring that my approach is always client-centered and empowering.

Moreover, as a pro-choice therapist, I recognize the importance of being informed about the socio-political factors that impact reproductive rights and the ways in which these intersect with issues of gender, race, socioeconomic status, and more. This awareness informs my practice and advocacy efforts, both within and outside the therapeutic space, to support access to comprehensive reproductive health services and to promote social justice.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
As a clinician, reproductive freedom and body autonomy are fundamentally important to me because they are essential to an individual's overall health, well-being, and dignity. Having control over one's own body and reproductive choices is a cornerstone of personal freedom and autonomy. It directly impacts mental health, allowing individuals to make decisions that are best for their life circumstances, health, and future.

Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are not just about the ability to make choices concerning reproduction; they're also about respecting and affirming the inherent worth and self-determination of each person. These principles are integral to fostering a therapeutic environment that is safe, empowering, and validating.

In my practice, supporting these rights means advocating for and upholding an individual's right to make informed choices about their body and reproductive health without coercion or judgment. It's about acknowledging and respecting the complex interplay between physical health, mental health, and social factors, and how these aspects contribute to a person's sense of self and quality of life.
