My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a pro-choice therapist means being a therapist who values their clients’ right to make the best choices for themselves, their families, and communities, and who is committed to affirming their clients’ right to make those choices. This value is key to practicing through a reproductive justice lens, though I think it is integral to any therapist supporting their client through any situation. My approach to clinical practice is person-centered, and my reproductive justice background greatly influences and fits in with that approach.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
The ethics of social work revolve around several values, including respecting the inherent dignity and worth of a person. Believing in and advocating for the right to bodily autonomy is essential to living out that value. My experiences as a clinic escort and abortion fund cofounder have made me intimately familiar with the ways that intersectional oppressive systems create barriers for people trying to exercise their right to bodily autonomy, and have strengthened my commitment to dismantling those barriers however I can.
