My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To be a pro-choice therapist means to affirm and celebrate the choices made by clients. I believe it is important not just to occupy a space of non-judgement to the reproductive choices made by clients, but to be curious about, explore, and ultimately honor those choices. I acknowledge that for some, decisions made about reproductive health are challenging and heavy, while for others they may not hold much weight or feel worth exploring. This means, my approach around topics of body autonomy is tailored to the client and their boundaries, and the extent to which they aim to discuss these topics. As a pro-choice therapist, I aim to go at the pace of the client and honor their consent along the way.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Autonomy, connection, and generativity are among some of my top values as a clinician. This does not stop at the level of the mind or emotions, but extends to the body. As such, I believe it is imperative that my clients choose the paths that are best for their bodies, their identities and their lives. This means that I believe they have the inherent right to reproductive freedom and body autonomy.
