My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
A pro-choice therapist does not simply passively support reproductive justice, but also seeks to advocate beyond the individual clients or patients. It looks like policy work and advocacy, such as testifying to legislators, calling senators, emailing representatives, and coordinating with organizations and clinicians nationwide to keep access to abortion, CSE, contraceptives, and STI testing and prevention going in the most marginalized communities.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
To me, this falls so firmly and absolutely within the NASW Code of Ethics values of self-determination, as well as dignity and worth of the person. But more so than just being a part of my profession, this to me is the embodiment of the same struggles I see as a clinician advocating for gender-affirming care and other struggles that fall in solidarity with reproductive justice. Simply put, legislation should never come at the cost of well-being and healthcare outcomes as evidenced by data, because data should always be used to further these public goods.
