My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To be a "pro-choice therapist" is inherent to the work of being a therapist. I believe they go hand in hand, and are inextricable from one another. My work is client directed and firmly rooted in self-determination. This is no different when discussing abortion care in therapy. I believe in every person's individual right to choose what is right for them wherever they are in their life, and that my role as a therapist is to provide support at whatever step they are in making that choice.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe that we are seeing a concerted effort to chip away at body autonomy, of which reproductive freedom is an integral part. I feel that this has been present throughout history as a way for individuals in power to exert control over others; whether it has been people with disabilities, racial and ethnic minorities, people who can become pregnant, or gender diverse individuals. It is important to me that we understand body autonomy for each of us is body autonomy for all and a threat to one of us is a threat to all of us because history shows us that the control will simply shift. In my role as a therapist, I understand that when people do not feel safe it is incredibly difficult to focus on any other mental healing. Therefore the work of reproductive freedom and body autonomy are also foundational to the promotion of mental health and wellbeing.
