My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To be a pro-choice therapist to me means the same thing as being a pro-choice individual, which is having respect for the choices that people make over their bodily autonomy even if their decision or beliefs differ from mine. They have every right to do what they believe is right for their bodies, because at the end of the day what someone does with their own body is none of my business and has no impact on me.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
As a sex therapist and educator (and as someone who grew up in Catholic school) I've seen firsthand the harm that is done when people don't receive adequate education regarding sex, consent, and reproduction. I received abstinence based curriculum that actively left out the importance of autonomy and pleasure, in addition to demonizing STIs and reporting false information. Being able to have bodily autonomy is life saving, whether it's termination of a pregnancy because of health concerns, financial concerns, or whatever the reason that's meaningful, or not wanting to have children, the power shouldn't be on anyone but the person making the decision of their own body.
