My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
I identify as a pro-abortion therapist. I am affirming of abortion and all pregnancy outcomes. I recognize that "choice" is a very limiting word because choice is not a reality for many folks due to structures of oppression that exist to rob people of their bodily autonomy. I believe that bodily autonomy is a human right and as a therapist, I support folks emotionally and informationally through any and all reproductive health experiences.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe that bodily autonomy is a human right. As SisterSong's definition of reproductive justice teaches us, everyone should have the right to have, not have, and parent their children in safe & sustainable communities if, when, and how they want to. To me, bodily autonomy is essential to client-centered therapy. I think that meeting a client where they are, regardless of where that is, is a key tenet of both reproductive justice and supportive mental health practice.
