My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist means I listen to my clients and their needs. All of my opinions and biases are out the door. It means meeting clients where they are and providing services that they need based on their experiences - not my own or anyone elses. Everyone experiences reproductive freedom and body autonomy differently and it means different things to different people. Its always about being there for my clients and helping them find services/resources that will be helpful no matter what their situation or needs.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy is important to me because, as a woman living in a state with one of the strictest abortion bans in the U.S., I have experienced first had the repercussions of not having these rights. It is devastating to individuals, families, and entire communities. Ive worked with women whose reproductive freedom literally saved their lives and that is exactly why this is such an important issue. Reproductive freedom and body autonomy IS mental health care. It is suicide prevention at its core. It is life saving.
