My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To be a pro-choice therapist is to create a space for clients to find safety, comfort, and relief as they move through reproductive experiences (pregnancy, abortion, gender-affirming surgery, adoption, etc.). This means not only holding space for an individual, but also recognizing that the act of holding space for these experiences connects us to the larger collective action of moving toward reproductive justice and decreasing stigma and shame associated with reproductive choices. It means creating spaces of authenticity and wellness in many forms.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe reproductive freedom and body autonomy are the heart of liberation for all people. Restrictions (both legal and social) on a person’s bodily autonomy have long been a catalyst for more far-reaching oppression, including racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, etc. As a clinician whose work is grounded in liberation and helping clients find healing through connection and empowerment, I value reproductive justice as a means to creating safety, healing, and joy both inside and outside the therapy space.
