My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist to me means that clients are able to make any choice regarding their body that they see fit and right for them. This applies in so many ways, but the hot-button conversations in our country typically center this around pregnancy and gender affirming care. I believe that in order to truly support a client's journey for mental healing, a therapist must support their rights to complete choice in matters that include their body. One's body and the choices we make surrounding the body are so personal and nuanced; we must give the clients the trust, support, and encouragement to explore and make those choices in the therapeutic setting.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
As a clinician in Texas, reproductive freedom and body autonomy are crucial values that I hold both in my professional and personal lives. In this area, it can be extremely difficult to find providers who hold space for bodily autonomy for those who identify as women. Without reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy, so many aspects of the therapeutic process can be hindered and mental health outcomes are known to be worse. All people deserve the right to make decisions about their body in all ways, and that includes in regard to pregnancy.
