My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
The client is the only one living in their body, in their specific context, with their specific circumstances. Being a pro-choice therapist means being openly and assertively supportive and respectful of my clients' decisions about their lives and their bodies, including the decision to have an abortion at any point in their pregnancy, for any reason.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
All humans deserve to have full bodily autonomy, and to make decisions about our bodies without interference from anyone. As a therapist, this means cultivating a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to explore and make decisions about their reproductive health that align with their own unique needs and values without the influence of external coercion, including by religious and political rhetoric. Providing services in a state that has highly restrictive laws surrounding abortion rights, I see every day how necessary it is for pro-choice providers to be open about our values so clients know they are not alone.
