My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
I believe being a pro-choice therapist means truly centering a client's ability to choose their best option. My role is a facilitator for a client's decision-making process. I use evidence-based approaches to establish safety, hold space, reflect client's words back to them, and cope with whatever emotions arise in the process. Additionally, within my field of perinatal mental health, I want to support clients who are working through their choices and emotions around terminations for medical reasons (TFMR). I want each client to have their own experience of the pregnancy and to have a shame-free space to process the idea of ending a pregnancy for whatever the reason might be.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Becoming a mother broke me. I learned how tenuous life can be and how overwhelmingly parenthood changes and consumes a birther's entire life. The impact of bearing, birthing, and raising a child on birthing people is enormous. All people with a uterus have a right to agency and informed consent to enter parenthood. No one should be forced into such a dangerous, physically and mentally dominating experience. The risks are real, the stakes are high, and the impacts are permanent. Anyone who does not feel they are able to continue a pregnancy should have access to quality, safe reproductive medical care in the form of evidence-based methods, quality research, and medical abortion.
