My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist means that I listen non-judgementally and with unconditional positive regard. It also means that I advocate for pro-choice policies. I knocked over 500 doors prior to the November 2024 election in Missouri for amendment 3, which enshrined the right to a (surgical) abortion in the state of Missouri. There is more work to do, which is why I support agencies like Planned Parenthood and Abortion Action Missouri.
I meet my clients where they are at. When a client is in need of resources for abortion, I will point them in the direction of legitimate sources and educate on the predatory nature of crisis pregnancy centers (prevalent in Missouri and Kansas). Overall, I will support my clients individually based on their needs.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
People have a right to choose what is best for them. Everyone deserves access to abortion, and people who have become pregnant through traumatic means should not be obligated to disclose details of their trauma to access abortion care. As a parent by choice, for choice, I cannot imagine forcing anyone to endure the experience of pregnancy who does not want to.
