My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
As a feminist therapist, I support reproductive choice because I believe in individuals' autonomy, access to healthcare, social justice, reducing stigma, and providing trauma-informed care. It's about respecting people's right to make their own decisions about their bodies and lives without judgment or coercion.
I recognize that patriarchal systems and structures often seek to control and regulate individuals' bodies, particularly those of marginalized groups, including women, transgender and nonbinary individuals, and people of color. By advocating for reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy, I aim to challenge these power dynamics and dismantle systems of oppression that limit individuals' agency and self-expression.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are closely linked to mental health and well-being. When individuals are denied control over their own bodies and reproductive choices, it can lead to feelings of powerlessness, shame, and trauma. In contrast, when individuals are supported in making informed decisions about their bodies and reproductive lives, it can contribute to a sense of empowerment, agency, and self-confidence. I work with individuals who have diverse experiences, values, and circumstances that influence their reproductive choices, and these choices should be respected and supported.
