My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
As a pro-choice therapist, I follow my clients lead and respect their boundaries when discussing cultural issues. I understand that I can never walk a mile in my client's shoes, but instead humbly walk beside them as an encouraging and open presence. I believe nothing is taboo in therapy. I welcome difficult conversations about inter-sectional identities (this is what therapy is all about!) .
I welcome diversity including all body sizes, abilities, races, ethnicities, socio-economic classes, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions, and documentation statuses. I proudly add pro choice to this list in affirming my clients diversity and autonomy.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I enjoy working with my clients in their process of reclaiming their stories and separating out legacies of strength and survival from painful feelings of shame and blame. I am a life long learner whose undergraduate work focused on post-colonial history; I strive to always be on the lookout for new analysis on how the political informs the personal. Approaching therapy from a systemic, contextual and social justice lens is key to how I approach my work as a therapist.
