My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being pro-choice is an affirmation of the dignity, value, and humanity of each person and a statement that reproductive decisions are an individual choice that should never be forced or coerced. The ultimate decision lies with the person who is choosing for their own body, mind, and wellbeing. Only they can choose what is best for them. A pro-choice therapist recognizes they are a facilitator of the process of that choice, or a helper if there is pain or trauma in the aftermath of that choice, but the therapist is never the decider or influencer. The decision must be the person's alone.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
No government or system should impose its will on any individual. Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are the most basic rights we have over our own bodies. Groups and systems who want to control others' bodies do not value those others as fully human. Affirming reproductive rights and body autonomy is the same as affirming the humanity and dignity of every individual.
