My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist means creating a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their feelings, experiences, and decisions about their bodies and reproductive health without fear of stigma or shame. It means respecting each person’s autonomy, supporting their right to make informed choices, and acknowledging the complex emotional, cultural, and societal factors that influence these decisions.
For me, pro-choice also extends beyond reproductive rights—it’s about bodily autonomy in all aspects of life, including sexuality, gender identity, and medical decisions. My role is not to impose beliefs but to empower clients to navigate their choices with clarity, self-compassion, and agency.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are fundamental to mental, emotional, and sexual well-being. As a sex therapist, I see how agency over one’s body impacts self-worth, relationships, and overall quality of life. Everyone deserves the right to make informed choices about their body without fear, shame, or coercion.
Bodily autonomy is also central to consent, pleasure, and healing. Many of my clients are working through cultural, religious, or societal messages that have disconnected them from their own desires and needs. My work is about helping people reclaim their sense of self, honor their boundaries, and cultivate a relationship with their body that is rooted in choice, empowerment, and care.
