My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a "pro-choice therapist" (or a "pro-abortion therapist") means to me that I prioritize trust, empathy, and safety in my work with clients. I trust in their judgment to know what is best for themselves, their health, their futures, and/or their families. I feel empathy for their experiences which may have included overcoming barriers to access care, external and internalized harmful narratives about abortion, and guilt or shame. And I work hard to create a space and therapeutic relationship in which it feels safe to bravely share their experiences with someone who will validate, support, and sit with them inside of the most difficult moments and emotions without fear of judgment or becoming a burden.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are important to me because my first pregnancy with my son ended in abortion after he was found to be very sick about halfway through my pregnancy. Due to geography and politics, the devastating loss of my son was made even more painful and complex by the misinformation, shame, and judgment of the anti-abortion movement. No one other than me, my husband, and my doctor should have had any say in the what, when, how, or why of my abortion, yet many who will never know or care for us did. While I had always believed in the right to abortion, my own personal experience has expanded my compassion and drive to fight for these rights. Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are the very foundation of liberty. As a TFMR mom, I know too well what happens when that most basic liberty is disregarded and limited.
