My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a pro-choice therapist means whole heartedly supporting the reproductive choices that someone makes for themselves, while also understanding the way that political and social systems limit the choices that people can make. Being a pro-choice therapist means not only supporting people in their choice to have an abortion but acknowledging the stress and trauma that can come from stigma or the difficulty accessing an abortion, which are external factors not inherent to this basic medical care. I am rooted in the values of reproductive justice, which emphasize the importance of empowering people to make the decision when and if they parent, but emphasize that we need to create a world where people are supported in parenting and can raise their families in safe, supportive environments with access to the resources they need. In that regard, being “pro-choice” is not just about the moment someone decides to have an abortion, but about working for a world where people have what they need to be the best versions of themselves.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are an essential part of being a trauma-informed, person-centered therapist. So much of what brings people to therapy is the experience of having choice taken away from them, and part of healing is restoring choice and autonomy in your life today. That includes having a safe and supportive therapy space with someone that knows you are the expert on your body and life, and can help you navigate the range of emotions and experiences when navigating your reproductive identity. Pregnancy and abortion are very personal decisions that are so heavily influenced by social messaging and expectations, and as a therapist I want to support people by trusting what they want and need for their bodies and lives at that particular moment in time.
