My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
I believe that the decision to have an abortion is that of the pregnant persons. As a pro-choice clinician, I believe it’s my duty to help my clients lean in to their support systems, reassure them that they are not alone, help them access accurate medical information and stand by them with unconditional positive regard no matter their decision. As a mental health clinician, I am honored again and again by the stories and experiences my clients share with me and I never cease to be in awe of the human spirit and ability to overcome.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe that it is inherently unjust to force a person to carry a pregnancy that is unwanted or unviable. Our code of ethics explicitly states that we allow our clients autonomy over their decisions and that includes decisions about their bodies. To be a truly ethical clinician I believe it is my responsibility to empower clients to do what is best for them regardless of stigma and cultural expectations.
We are living in a country founded on colonialism, capitalism, the white supremacy delusion, and patriarchy. I believe that controlling the reproductive freedom of people and limiting bodily autonomy are extensions of these systems that aim to control women, BIPOC, the unhoused, queer folx and other historically marginalized people. I believe that all people have the right to control their reproduction in a way that is safe, affordable, and accessible. I believe that I cannot fully serve my clients if I am upholding any of these systems that make us all ill.
