just quit NASW last year because of concerns about their stance or lack of stance on several issues. Trying to assess where to go from here.

My Pro-Choice Perspective

What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
I think being a pro-choice therapist means a couple of things; first and foremost that I will support whatever decision you make about your body- even if it's not the same one that I would make for you. I will hold that decision in the same care and non-judgmental space that I hold your other life decisions.

I think it also means being someone who actively talks about/learns about/seeks to understand the connection between the personal act of deciding if and when to carry a pregnancy and the political impact of our current social system including the political BS that makes abortion and birth control access difficult.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and body autonomy are important to me both personally and professionally. As someone who's had an abortion and is a parent, I understand what it meant for me to make those decisions and I wish that I'd had access to more supportive care during those times. I want to ensure that you have care during these times.

Our body autonomy is intricately linked to our agency (our ability to make choices about our lives without undue influence - or rather with the influence of our own values, needs, hopes, dreams, etc). I care deeply about protecting people's agency and as a social worker, it's part of our ethical mandate- we cannot exercise our agency without body autonomy. It's so important to me that I started my social work career at NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon and still volunteer there and at Planned Parenthood when I can.

Reproductive freedom is also tied to other forms of liberation- freedom from racism, sexism and the ills of capitalism are not feasible without reproductive freedom. I work with all of my clients to see the relationship between these issues and welcome more opportunities to learn.
