My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist means supporting a client's rights to make their own decisions about their reproductive health, including the decision to have an abortion. It means providing a non-judgmental and agenda-free therapeutic space where clients feel safe exploring decisions they are faced with connected to reproductive decisions. Additionally, I believe being a pro-choice therapist also means an ongoing commitment to for advocacy safe, legal and equitable reproductive health care. It also includes continuing to push back against any legislative efforts aimed to require providers report our client's abortion.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are human rights that are essential for ensuring equality and empowerment, socioeconomic well-being, and recognizing that abortion is healthcare. As a therapist who specializes in trauma treatment, I recognize the impact of having your personal agency taken away from you. I want reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy for the well-being of my individual clients - but also for our collective well-being. Abortion bans and restrictions harm all people, but cause even greater harm to those already subject to systemic racism and economic injustice.
