My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist means I leave the decision up to my clients; it means I come alongside them with compassion and without judgment. Whatever my clients are coming into therapy for, whether it be for talking through current or past experiences with pregnancy, I will follow their lead and offer support wherever possible. If they want to unpack the shame and stigma that comes with making these decisions, I will guide them through till the end of their healing journey. If my client doesn't want to talk about these topics and just wants the security of knowing that their therapist would support them in making their own decision, I would be that too.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Reproductive freedom and Body autonomy are basic human rights that have evaded us for centuries, and with every step towards it, others may question what is right and wrong. However, it is always up to the person to decide what they want to do with their body. Each one of us comes from various backgrounds, religions, belief systems, and health, which is why we must respect that our differences mean what is right for one person may be different from another. We should be increasing options and access to care because with less stigma and ignorance about reproduction, we would see that folks would have less shame, making educated decisions more freely. We would even be able to focus our energy on keeping folks safe and healthy through whatever choice they make about their body and Planned Parenthood.
