My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
To me, being a pro-choice therapist means that I support my clients' right to decide what is best for them. Full stop. That applies to any choice a client makes, whether that be reproductive, physical, mental, social, educational, etc.. The right to make one's own decisions is enshrined in my professional ethics as a social worker and my personal values as well. There is so much time, thought, and concern that goes into making decisions around reproductive health, and I believe that being pro-choice means I respect the client as their own best expert. A client's journey is their own, as mine is my own. It is a privilege to be invited on another's life journey; the least we can do in that sacred space is respect the individual's ability to set the course
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
We are the only ones who will ever live in our respective bodies. We are only given one, and it has to last us a lifetime. The experiences we have with our bodies, positive or negative, will never impact anyone as much as it impacts us. It only makes sense, then, that we should be the first and final ones to make decisions about our own bodies.
