My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being a pro-choice therapist to me means upholding the values of the reproductive justice movement, including the right to have a child, the right not to have a child and the right to parent in safe and healthy environments both while sitting in my therapy chair and by participating in advocacy work in my community.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
I believe that reproductive freedom and body autonomy are human rights issues and that restricting access to abortion care is discriminatory towards women and birthing people. As a therapist who is certified in perinatal mental health, I have seen first hand how empowering for women it can be to have control of their fertility and any attempts to limit that control seem like a ruse meant only to advance the patriarchal stronghold. And generally, I believe that all medical decisions should be made between a patient and their care team, with science and informed consent leading the way, not politicians and piety.
