My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
Being pro-choice as a therapist is about demonstrating that stance both in and outside of "the office." I support my clients in understanding current and available health information that will allow them the knowledge to make the decisions that are best for them, for their bodies, and for their lives. It also means living that support myself, politically and actively. I have been a promoter and supporter of Planned Parenthood and political/legal change that affirms and supports women's health-based freedom.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
Historically and globally, women's right to their bodies, sexual, and reproductive choices have been controlled by men. After centuries of fighting, we are now only a few decades in to seeing this begin to change, only to see it being quickly rolled back.
My grandmother and mother were both staunch feminists and activists for women's autonomy and health-based rights. I was raised and believe, not only in a woman's right to choose, but in the importance of men's radical support in creating systemic change that will enshrine those rights so that they can not be undone.
I practice from feminist theory and in the affirmation of all women's rights for full access to services that support her health and sexual freedom.
